MEISJESSCHOOL LOENHOUT
At Kapelstraat 2 in Loenhout stands a building that has shaped generations: the former girls’ school. Founded in the 19th century by mayor Albert J.M. Montens d’Oosterwijck and the Sisters of Saint Vincent de Paul, this site grew into a cornerstone of education and community life. Architecturally, the complex is a fine example of local brickwork with subtle art deco influences. Two symmetrical volumes, built in red brick, enclose a trapezoid-shaped courtyard – a sheltered inner world that once offered safety and security for village education.
Today, this residential project breathes new life into the historic school. The existing façades and volumes are carefully preserved, safeguarding the authenticity of the village setting. At the same time, sustainable renovations, energy-efficient technologies, and smart layouts bring the buildings up to modern living standards. The result is a harmonious blend of past and future, where heritage and comfort reinforce one another.
The central courtyard forms the social heart of the project. Here, residents meet in a green, serene environment designed for play, relaxation, and togetherness. This outdoor space embodies the project’s vision: affordable, accessible homes that encourage community and connection. Young starters and seniors alike will find a meaningful, functional home embedded in a setting of history and nature.
Sustainability runs as a guiding principle throughout the design. Heat pumps, solar panels, rainwater harvesting, and low-maintenance green spaces shape a forward-looking living model with minimal ecological impact. A botanical garden with nesting boxes fosters biodiversity, adding to the quality of life for residents.
This project is more than a redevelopment. It is a respectful tribute to Loenhout’s rich history—and an investment in a community ready for the future.
