STRATEGIC MASTERPLAN SETS DIRECTION FOR SOUTH HAI PHONG ECONOMIC ZONE, VIETNAM

Van Aelst Nguyen & Partners, in collaboration with OMGEVING, and in effective partnership with DEEP C, has developed the concept masterplan for the South Hai Phong Economic Zone (SHPEZ) in Vietnam. This 20,000-hectare strategic special economic zone has been designated within Hai Phong’s city masterplan as one of the country’s most important future economic engines.

Driven by strong sustainability ambitions, the blue-green network forms the spatial backbone of the masterplan. A reinforced mangrove park along the coastline and a series of inland river parks structures the landscape, while ‘green loops’ in each subzone provide space for water buffering, biodiversity, and accessible green areas. Within this ecological framework, a diverse mix of industrial and logistics functions is integrated. Anchored by the deep-sea port as the economic heart, these functions are embedded with respect for local communities and the environment, fostering inclusive and resilient growth. A sustainable, multimodal mobility system connects water, rail, road, and air transport, ensuring efficient and future-proof accessibility.

The SHPEZ concept masterplan marks an important starting point in the process of establishing and implementing the zone. It will contribute to Hai Phong’s long-term economic development and reinforce the city’s strategic position at both the national and regional levels.
